EVRASCON Reconstructs Hazi Aslanov Metro Turnback Tracks
EVRASCON Completes Reconstruction of Turnback Tracks at Hazi Aslanov Metro Station
Major reconstruction works have been completed on the turnback tracks at Hazi Aslanov Station on the Red Line of the Baku Metro. The construction works were carried out by Euro-Asian Construction Corporation EVRASCON OJSC as the project contractor. Final testing is currently underway. Once the tests are completed, the turnback tracks will be commissioned.
Construction of the turnback tracks began in the 1980s. Prolonged operation, complex hydrogeological conditions, and aggressive groundwater caused severe corrosion of the load-bearing reinforced concrete structures. As a result, almost the entire infrastructure of the turnback tracks, with a total length of approximately 1 km, was dismantled and reconstructed, except for the ceiling structure.
Key works carried out as part of the project:
-
The soil behind the walls and beneath the floor was strengthened using injection grouting at a depth of 1.5–2 m, preventing groundwater and rainwater infiltration.
-
With the ceiling supported by temporary steel structures, the side and central walls were dismantled in stages and replaced with new concrete structures.
-
The reinforced concrete ceiling was strengthened using previously tested carbon-fiber-reinforced composite materials. This technology was applied in the Baku Metro for the first time.
-
Protective anti-corrosion coatings were applied to the walls and ceiling.
-
The track superstructure was completely renewed: wooden sleepers were replaced with reinforced concrete blocks, and the tracks were converted to a ballastless track system.
-
Each track was extended by 20 m to accommodate six-car trains. Six new turnouts were installed on monolithic foundations within the four-track turnback facility.
-
An aluminum-based conductor rail was installed to reduce energy consumption and simplify maintenance.
-
The power supply, communications, signaling, fiber-optic networks, video surveillance, fire safety, water supply, sewage, and ventilation systems were completely upgraded.
All works were carried out while ensuring the safety of the underground facility, nearby residential buildings, and roads, without disrupting the city's daily activities.
Mammad Rzayev, Head of the Construction Project Management Department at Baku Metro CJSC, emphasized the complexity of the project: “This project is not an ordinary repair job.” According to him, the most challenging stage involved the phased dismantling and reconstruction of the walls while keeping the ceiling structure in place.
The project was implemented with Baku Metro CJSC as the client, MIRAS Engineering as the design company, and EVRASCON OJSC as the contractor.
Once the turnback tracks are commissioned, shuttle train operations between Hazi Aslanov and Ahmadli stations will be discontinued, and direct train services from Icherisheher to Hazi Aslanov will resume.
The turnback tracks will be used for overnight train stabling, technical inspections, and supporting train operations at shorter intervals.
