Bridge over the Samur River

In December 2019, at the SDK checkpoint on the border of Azerbaijan and Russia, the grand opening of the bridge across the Samur River took place.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan Shahin Mustafayev, the head of Dagestan region Vladimir Vasiliev, the ambassador of Azerbaijan to Russia Polad Bulbuloglu, the ambassador of Russia to Azerbaijan Mikhail Bocharnikov, the Minister of Economic Development of Russia Maxim Oreshkin and the head of the Executive Power of the Qusar region Shair Alkhasov.

The new Bridge over the Samur River replaced the previously existing, built in 1953-1957 and put into operation in 1957 as part of the Samur hydroelectric complex, and reduced holdups. After the commissioning of the new bridge, the old one was closed for traffic, and began function as a service bridge for the operation of the hydraulic system, because it did not meet modern standards and requirements.

Despite the great competition among both Russian and Azerbaijani construction companies, the construction was entrusted to the Azerbaijani Euro-Asian Construction Corporation “EVRASCON”, and the design solutions for the road bridge across the Samur River were developed by CSC SRC “Gidrotransproyekt”.

The bridge over the Samur River consists of a continuous monolithic prestressed structure, 5 spans.

• The total length of the bridge is 325.3 m;
• The size of the bridge for 2-lane traffic on the highway of the II technical category is G - 11.5 m;
• Full width of the bridge W = 17.3 m;
• The bridge is placed on a curve in the plan with a radius of R = 600 m;
• The length of the bridge with approaches is 812.84 m.

Connection of people living on the different banks of one river is a very important event for both local residents and economic cooperation.
